The King's Choice
April 1940. Germany invades Norway.
The Prime Minister, his cabinet and the King flee the capital.
The government, in shambles, is unsure of what to do to save the country. Just a ceremonial figurehead with no real constitutional power, they still look to the King.
Another person also looks to the King as the man in charge.
Adolf Hitler instructs his envoy to forget about the government and seek the King’s agreement to transition Norway to German control, without resistance.
Or face the consequences.
(Norway is no match for the German war machine).
A grave choice.
The King ultimately refuses.
He proclaims that acceding to Germany would go against everything he considers his duty to Norway.
The next day, Norway is at war with Germany.
“The King’s refusal remains a unique royal intervention in modern Norwegian politics.
A symbolic beacon in the fight for a democratic, sovereign Norway.”
— Erik Poppe, The King’s Choice, 2016
A nation’s Sovereignty is important.
Less discussed, but even more important is individual Sovereignty. Your Sovereignty.
Sovereignty is freedom.
It is the freedom to sing your soul’s song. True freedom. To choose, to flow, to act, to be, as you wish. Regardless of what anyone or society thinks. Unaffected and unadulterated.
(Of course in a way that doesn’t hurt or affect others Sovereignty).
Sovereignty is freedom of mind, freedom of time, freedom of spirit.
It is a refusal to cede control or be seduced by any outside force(s) that can diminish this freedom. They can come in many forms - jobs, governments, leaders, influencers, celebrities, “experts”, the media, society, other people.
Sovereignty isn’t radical. It’s a birthright.
We’ve been conditioned to believe we never fully had/deserved a claim to it, and/or to just give it away to some external power.
You take this power back by affirming and believing in your Sovereignty.
The consequences may not always be pretty, so you always have a choice.
After all, you are the King/Queen of You.
What will you choose King/Queen?
Have a wonderful weekend,
-Amit
